Social and Emotional Learning

Social and Emotional Learning framework

Scotts Valley Unified believes that the social-emotional well-being of our students and staff is foundational to learning. As a district, we value the Collaborative, Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework of five social-emotional competencies and incorporate social-emotional learning in the classrooms.  This can look like carpet time and learning how to be a respectful member of the classroom.  Or, it can look like students managing what homework needs to be completed before fun activities are enjoyed.  It is about learning how to be a good friend or how to manage our emotions when we get upset.

Please view this introduction video for more information on:

  • Self-Awareness

  • Self-Management

  • Social Awareness

  • Relationship Skills

  • Responsible Decision Making

As you can see from CASEL’s framework wheel, the five SEL competencies can be an important part of a child’s life at school, in the home, and in the community.

SVUSD's Social-Emotional Learning curriculum is ReThink Ed  We will start the 2023-24 school year with training for staff and begin the social-emotional lessons in August in classrooms across the district.  Stay tuned for more information for parents.

Parents can be pivotal in the prevention and treatment of teen mental health problems

In the News Parents Can be Pivotal in the Prevention and Treatment of Teen Mental Health Problems

Our partner, NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Santa Cruz County, offers many incredible free classes and supports groups. We would like to draw your attention to the Family Support Group for Parents and Caregivers of Youth (PCOY), which happens every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. We know many of our youth are struggling with anxiety, depression, and other mental and emotional concerns, and we have heard directly how concerned their family members are. This is a free, drop-in resource where parents and caregivers can meet each other and share stories, information, and hope.
